
For the simplicity of the entire issue, computer hardware can be described as those physical parts of a computer that you can see. For instance, printers, scanners, the monitor, CPU and mouse are all computer hardware. It is however important to also note that, computer hardware cannot function without software considering that it is the latter that translates the instructions you give and then the hardware execute it. Worth noting also is the fact that not all computer owners have the same type of hardware though most of it is similar. Owners of notebook computers might want to claim that they have never encountered hardware on their machines but the truth is, it is often integrated into a single unit that is portable.
The computer’s central processing unit is usually the actual computer hardware and all the others are usually referred to as peripheral devices. This form of hardware is the one that is central to all operations of the computer since it bears the hard disk in which all softwares are stored. Almost all system units have slots into which either a floppy or compact disc can be inserted. It is worth noting that even the software responsible for playing music from your computer is stored in the hard disk which is also computer hardware.
The floppy and CD drives are often referred to as drives with removable media or at other times they are often referred to as removable devices. It is important to note that they are also part of computer hardware. One of the other most crucial computer hardware devices is the random access memory. All the information and data that you have stored in the hard disk cannot all be accessible at the same time, something that requires you to access each piece at a time. The amount of information that you access at each particular time is often stored on the random access memory at that particular time.
The random access memory is commonly abbreviated as RAM. The major characteristic associated with using RAM is the fact that it is usually very fast, something that guarantees you quick activity and more time being productive. The main question probably going through your mind right now is that if the RAM is so effective and fast then why not use it to store all the information but the plain answer is, it is usually volatile. This means that no matter how much or little information it had stored at a given time, the information disappears as soon as there is a power outage or both intentional and unintentional computer shut off.
The hard disk can hold all the information stored inside with or without electricity for very long periods. There are however different hard disk capabilities on varying hard disks. In fact, most modern ones have large storage spaces totaling to hundreds and thousands of gigabytes. Soon as you start filling up your hard disk windows is going to show a message letting you know that you are running low on disk space. The message appears early in advance to prevent your system from crashing.
